QR Codes and Messaging Apps – perfect to grow your Business!

I was in the USA on holidays last week and had a great lunch in a bar, sun was shining, and all was great in the world. When the server brought me the bill at the end of our lunch, it had a QR code with the Bill amount from which I could read the QR code (using my QR reader on my phone), it brought me to their payment portal, pre-populated my bill, my table and from there I could complete payment using Google pay add my tip and get my receipt. This was such a convenient experience I started thinking  how QR codes would work with Messaging Applications and make Conversation Commerce better. The answer is they complement each other perfectly and can help you grow your Business.

What are QR Codes and how do you use them?

Short for quick response, QR codes are scannable barcodes that store data. QR codes were invented in 1994 by a Japanese automotive company Denso Wave. A QR code consists of black squares arranged in a square grid on a white background, which can be read by an imaging device such as a camera and processed. This system gained in popularity due to their fast readability and greater storage capacity compared to standard UPC barcodes (the rectangle codes you see on products in supermarkets). In the marketing sphere, they are commonly used to redirect users to landing pages, websites, social media profiles, or store coupons.

For customers to read a QR code they simply need to open the QR reader available on every smart phone. For android smartphones simply swipe down twice from the home screen, and if you scroll through the system applications you will see the ‘Scan QR code.’ If you open this application, it will mention your camera where you can read / scan the QR code. It will then bring you to a website or a social media site or even launch your Apple pay or Google pay with the amount of the bill.

How to use QR Codes with Messaging Applications effectively?

One of the first and simplest ways to use QR codes is to encode your business phone number and the messaging application you wish the customer to launch. This would provide a fast call to action that you could include on your Business cards, your website, social media or update your google business settings . When the customer reads the QR code they will be immediately launching their preferred Messaging App like WhatsApp and enter a conversation with your business. If you have a Conversational Commerce platform the messaging chat bot will engage your customers.

Other simple use cases can be to use QR codes for promotions such as ‘two for one’ Wednesdays or ‘10% off Mondays’ or any promotion you wish to offer. By attaching this to a message application and a messaging chat bot, this will provide a structured customer engagement and a higher chance of a sale.

Its also great to use QR codes with messaging as a short cut to Fast Orders and payment for your top products or services. This can provide the fastest and shortest path from reading a QR code to ordering and paying for your customers. Your customers will be happy as they don’t have to search through a lengthy product and services catalogue, go through the checkout process. It’s little a couple of clicks.
